Senator Ngo’s Motion on Tibet Calls for Stronger Action Against Chinese Interference

May 15, 2019

Today, Senator Thanh Hai Ngo issued the following statement regarding the introduction of his Senate motion on Tibet:

“It is imperative for Canada to reinforce a rules-based international order by standing with its Tibetan community and by supporting the advocacy efforts in favour of the Middle Way Approach as a pathway to peace that seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet within the Chinese state.

“In recent years, we have witnessed wide-ranging violations of fundamental rights, including an alarming rate of detentions, prosecutions, and convictions of Tibetans for the peaceful exercise of their freedoms of expression, assembly, and religious belief and cultural identity exerted by the Chinese Communist Party on the Tibetan people.”

“The Canadian government has a duty to call upon the People’s Republic of China to renew Sino-Tibetan dialogue and to respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Tibetan people – including their linguistics rights and freedom of movement, thought, conscience and religion.”

“This motion is a timely call for a rigid stance against these abuses and an act of support for Canada’s dynamic Tibetan community who are calling for freedom and justice.”

“This motion is also a condemnation of China’s mounting state-sponsored campaign of intimidation and bullying against Canada’s Tibetan community following several reports of Chinese interference in our communities and our universities, namely through China’s Confucius Institutes, whenever Canadians advocate for basic rights in Tibet, and advance the Dalai Lama’s message for patience, compassion, and tolerance.”

“I hope that all join me in support of this important call to our Government to take a concrete set of actions in recognition of the plight of the Tibetan people at every opportunity with China.”
