Flag-raising Ceremony at Toronto City Hall
April 28, 2018
On April 28, the City of Toronto, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Canadian Federation, welcomed hundreds upon hundreds of Vietnamese Canadians to Nathan Philip Square to witness the raising of the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag. In the weeks prior, the Toronto City Council unanimously adopted Motion MM38.6 to allow the flag to be raised on the City’s Courtesy Flag Pole in recognition of Journey to Freedom Day. Thanks to Mayor John Tory’s steadfast resolve and for his understanding of what Journey to Freedom Day represents to all Canadians, the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag will be hoisted at City Hall every year on April 30. Other distinguished guests included The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Official Opposition, Ms. Anne Thu Quach, MP for Salaberry-Suroît, Mr. Michael Levitt, MP for York Centre, and Toronto City Councillor Chin . A number of powerful music performances followed the official flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the boat people exodus and celebrate the many contributions of Vietnamese Canadians to our country’s strength and prosperity.
