Flag-raising Ceremony at the Legislative Assembly of BC
April 25, 2018
For the first time, Members of the Government of British Columbia hosted a formal Reception in honour of Journey to Freedom Day on May 25, 2018 in Victoria, BC. The Reception was followed by statements in Chamber, where Members of the Legislative Assembly proudly donned the yellow and red striped Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Scarves. Mr. Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway in British Columbia and Minister of Health, played an unprecedented and instrumental role in supporting the Vietnamese Canadian community in the Vancouver region to hold a flag-raising ceremony of the Vietnamese Freedom and Heritage Flag on the grounds of the BC Legislature prior to the Reception. Special thanks also go to The Hon. Darryl Plecas, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and Premier John Horgan, who showed tremendous support in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of refugees who left their homes in search of freedom and in celebrating the modern beginnings of the Vietnamese people in Canada. Likewise, the flag-raising ceremony would not have been possible without the 14 groups from the Vietnamese Canadian community, who gathered together to make this day a momentous and memorable day for all those who made the Journey to Freedom and all of those who followed.
