The Summer Internship Program with the Office of Senator Thanh Hai Ngo allows young individuals of Vietnamese origin across Canada to acquire practical work experience at the Senate of Canada. As in past years, the program aims to prepare youth for the workforce by providing them with practical experience, mainly in the areas of research and graphic design.
This summer, Senator Ngo will welcome four (4) university students for a duration of two (2) months. Among these four, two students will ideally have strong skills in research and analytics, and two will have a background in graphic design, photography/videography and digital media editing. Please find below a description of the available positions:
Research Assistant
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Executive Assistant and the Director of Parliamentary Affairs, the Research Assistant is responsible for providing support for activities and projects managed by the Office of Senator Thanh Hai Ngo.
The Research Assistant is responsible for undertaking, with a minimum of supervision, independent projects and activities in support of the objectives of the Summer Internship Project. The Research Assistant must also be able to express him/herself well in written and verbal communication and possess excellent time-management and organizational skills. The incumbent conducts himself/herself with the utmost decorum and professionalism at all times and demonstrates discretion with regards to protecting confidential information.
In particular, the Research Assistant’s duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct research for activities and projects that fall under the scope of the 2019 Summer Internship Program;
- Conduct in-depth research and prepare content, in collaboration with his/her team members, of a detailed and original annual Report on the Human Rights Situation in Vietnam;
- Become familiar with the Office’s electronic database and filing systems;
- Attend weekly Senate Standing Committee meetings and report on bi-weekly basis on the committee meeting studies, debates and proceedings
- Provide occasional administrative support, such as photocopying, scanning, and answering/transferring phone calls
- Recording meeting minutes, as required
- Maintaining paper and electronic copies of photos and documentation according to established procedures; and
- Assisting with various tasks at the request of the Senator of his staff.
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Must have knowledge of the Senate of Canada’s mandate and internal procedures
- Must have the ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage new responsibilities
- Must be able to interact appropriately with parliamentarians and Senate staff
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Superior research and analytical skills to clearly ascertain the concepts and areas involved in research;
- Must have basic administrative and office management skills
- An excellent knowledge of current office software applications, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook; and Adobe Acrobat
- An intermediate to strong knowledge of Adobe InDesign would be considered an asset
Education
The Research Assistant must be registered as a full-time student in a relevant program with a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
Digital Media Assistant
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Executive Assistant and the Director of Parliamentary Affairs, the Digital Media Assistant is responsible for providing support for activities and projects managed by the Office of Senator Thanh Hai Ngo.
The Digital Media Assistant is responsible for undertaking, with a minimum of supervision, independent projects and activities in support of the objectives of the Summer Internship Project. The Research Assistant must also be able to express him/herself well in written and verbal communication and possess excellent time-management and organizational skills. The incumbent conducts himself/herself with the utmost decorum and professionalism at all times and demonstrates discretion with regards to protecting confidential information.
In particular, the Digital Media Assistant’s duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with the design and publication of digital media for activities and projects that fall under the scope of the 2019 Summer Internship Program;
- Prepare digital content, in collaboration with his/her team members, for a detailed and original annual Report on the Human Rights Situation in Vietnam;
- Assist with photography and videography of the Senator’s community and diplomatic events;
- Assist with creating and editing original or existing video files for the Senator’s website and social media platforms;
- Become familiar with the Office’s electronic database and filing systems;
- Attend weekly Senate Standing Committee meetings and report on bi-weekly basis on the committee meeting studies, debates and proceedings
- Provide occasional administrative support, such as photocopying, scanning, and answering/transferring phone calls
