Senator Ngo Attends First Town Hall Meeting with the Toronto Vietnamese Community

OTTAWA, November 22, 2012 – Senator Thanh Hai Ngo attended a town hall meeting in Toronto on November 17, where he met with the Vietnamese seniors, youth, veterans and members of 14 Vietnamese associations. The GTA’s Vietnamese community gave their new parliamentarian a warm welcome and had the opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns.

“It was truly a great honour and pleasure to have been received by the members of Toronto’s Vietnamese community,” said Senator Ngo. “I wish to promote their remarkable efforts in advocating for better human rights conditions in Vietnam.”

The Senator also enjoyed meeting with the dynamic youth of this community.
“As a political figure, I wish to collaborate closely with the young people and encourage them to participate in civil society,” he said.

During this historic moment for Vietnamese Canadians, Senator Ngo raised issues related to the human rights situation in Vietnam. He encouraged the second generation youth to get involved in their communities by generously offering to match scholarship funding for internship opportunities in Ottawa, and pledging his support for the development of a Vietnamese Cultural Community Centre.

Senator Ngo concluded the meeting by honouring Vietnamese community leaders with Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.
