Flag raising at Queen’s Park
April 29, 2017
On April 29, 2017, the Honourable Senator Ngo attended the Toronto flag raising ceremony of the symbolic Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom flag at Queen’s Park in commemoration of Journey to Freedom Day. Organized by the Vietnamese Association of Toronto and The Vietnamese Veteran’s Association, this historical event marked the first flag raising at the Ontario Legislature. On this national day of commemoration, Vietnamese veterans and their families remembered the great sacrifices made in effort to find freedom and democracy after the fall of Saigon in 1975. The Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom flag raised was a powerful reminder of their modern beginnings in Canada, which opened its arms and hearts to Vietnamese refugees seeking asylum. Senator Ngo reiterated the importance of expressing gratitude to Canada for its incredible support in accepting over 60,000 refugees from Vietnam. The Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship, Mayor of Mississauga, Bonnie Crombie, MPs Judy Sgro and Michael Levitt, and MPP Soo Wong and Julia Munro attended the event wearing the yellow scarf with three red stripes.
