Protector Senior Citizen: Uncle Wong on the Front Lines
[For immediate release]
November 13th, 2019
82-year-old Uncle Wong is a passionate pro-democracy advocate. His youthful vigor is unmatched as he stands in solidarity with protesters, demanding that China’s ceases to infringe on Hong Kong’s autonomy. Wearing swimming goggles to protect against tear gas and resolutely brandishing his cane, this octogenarian fearlessly dashes to front lines to protect young demonstrators from the onslaught of riot police. He and his fellow citizens are members of Protect the Children, one of many community groups established to safeguard protesters. Morning, night, and weekend after weekend, they tirelessly plead with police and engage them in conversation in order to create a buffer zone, allowing protesters to escape and avoid arrest.
Driven by a profound sense of responsibility, he says that it is the duty of elders to protect the youth, fighting for democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law. He courageously affirms that he’ll keep returning to the streets for as long as the protests continue and that if he can help the protesters win the movement, he’ll die without regrets.
This is a truly inspiring example of the lengths one man will go to uphold the core values and fundamental freedoms we hold so dear as Canadians. We all have a responsibility to support freedom for Hong-Kong!
