Le 15 Octobre 2019 Aujourd\u2019hui, le s\u00e9nateur Thanh Hai Ngo a publi\u00e9 la d\u00e9claration suivante:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0After close to 6 months of protests, Hong Kong is on the verge of chaos because of the progressive failure of \u201cthe one country, two systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we idly observe the People\u2019s Republic of China\u2019s military massing at the border, everything possible must be done by Canadian private companies, organizations, and public officials to dissuade Beijing from escalating the violence, listen to the demands of the Hong Kong citizens, and free Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig from jail.<\/p>\n

Our responsibility to stand up to the giant wave of abuse, censorship, intimidation, and gross human rights violations committed by the single ruling Chinese Communist Party reminds me of a post-World War 2 poem exhibited at the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston<\/a>, entitled First they came\u2026<\/a>, by Pastor Martin Niem\u00f6ller, a Lutheran Minister, and an early Nazi Supporter who was later imprisoned for opposing Hitler\u2019s Regime.<\/p>\n

Inspired by Martin Niem\u00f6ller\u2019s words (left<\/em>), I have written an adaptation of this poem (right<\/em>) in honour of the pro-democracy Hong Kong protestors who have won the hearts and minds of people around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
 <\/p>\n

First they came for the Communists
\nAnd I did not speak out
\nBecause I was not a Communist<\/p>\n

Then they came for the Socialists
\nAnd I did not speak out
\nBecause I was not a Socialist<\/p>\n

Then they came for the trade unionists
\nAnd I did not speak out
\nBecause I was not a trade unionist<\/p>\n

Then they came for the Jews
\nAnd I did not speak out
\nBecause I was not a Jew<\/p>\n

Then they came for me
\nAnd there was no one left
\nTo speak out for me<\/p>\n

First they came for the Tibetans
\nAnd we did not speak out
\nBecause we were not Buddhist<\/p>\n

Then they came for the students at Tiananmen Square
\nAnd we did not speak out
\nBecause our liberty was not threatened<\/p>\n

Then they came for the priests
\nAnd we did not speak out
\nBecause we were not Christian<\/p>\n

Then they came for the Falun Gong
\nAnd we did not speak out
\nBecause our organs were not harvested<\/p>\n

Then they came for the Uyghur Muslims
\nAnd we did not speak out
\nBecause we were not forced into concentration camps<\/p>\n

Now they come for the Hong Kong protestors
\nAnd we are not speaking out
\nBecause profit is worth more than freedom<\/p>\n

Soon they\u2019ll come for us
\nAnd there will be no one left
\nTo speak out for us<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
